  1. The Bantu dominated most of the People's Republic of Angola from the early
  2. hundreds to 1500.  The slave trade was maximized by the Portuguese and the
  3. Bakongo kingdom in the late 1500s.  In the 1900s intensive colonization took
  4. place with the immigration of 400,000 Portuguese to Angola.
  5. Guerrilla warfare broke out in 1964 against the imperialist government lasting
  6. until Portugal granted independence to her once colony, Angola, in 1974.
  7. Fighting later shifted between the National Front, the Popular Movement, and
  8. the National Union.  The Popular Movement is supported by the Soviets and
  9. Cubans while the National Union is endorsed by the U.S. and S. Africa.  This
  10. conflict has caused the death of many thousands of blacks, forced whites to
  11. leave the country and resulted in economic ruin.  The Popular Movement
  12. gained control over most of the country in 1975 with assistance from Cuba
  13. and the Soviets.
  14. In an attempt to  help the National Union, South Africa invaded Southern
  15. Angola in June of 1981 killing 300 civilians.  The South Africans withdrew in
  16. September 1981. 
  17. The Marxist regime in Angola now is influenced and supported by the
  18. Russians, Cubans, East Germans, and communist Portuguese.
  19. Jonas Savimbi has organized a rebel group that is trying to oust the Marxist
  20. regime in Angola.  Savimbi is the leader of the National Union for Total
  21. Independence of Angola (UNITA).  He recently visited the U.S. in 1986 and met
  22. with President Reagan.  The U.S. government is supporting Savimbi's covert
  23. actions and rebel army by giving it $15 million of covert assistance from the
  24. CIA.                    @
